2024-2027 EEH Enduring Neuroscience Grand Rounds: Evaluation of New Onset Seizures

A seizure is unusual nerve cell activity in the brain. New-onset seizures are a common cause for presentation to acute medical services in community hospital settings. The presentation of new-onset seizures requires a good understanding of seizures and their mimics ensures appropriate investigation of the different etiologies, prognosis, and treatment. This presentation describes the assessment of seizures, differentiating from seizure mimics, and the management of patients presenting with seizure symptoms to the emergency department.

1. Differentiate seizures from seizure mimics.
2. Order appropriate testing for first-time seizures.
3. Provide counseling and treatment for first-time seizures.
