Overview

Trauma is highly prevalent and can have lasting effects on the brain, body, and overall health, yet clinicians may not consistently recognize the neurobiological impact of trauma or incorporate evidence-based brain-body approaches into clinical care. This educational activity is specifically designed for behavioral health clinicians and other healthcare professionals who care for individuals affected by trauma. The symposium will bridge gaps in knowledge and clinical practice by exploring the neurobiology of trauma, evidence-based treatment approaches, pharmacologic considerations, and emerging developments in trauma care. Through expert presentations, interactive discussion, and practical application, learners will gain knowledge and strategies to better recognize trauma-related processes, integrate evidence-based interventions, and support improved patient outcomes.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify at least three key neurobiological changes associated with trauma in the brain and body.
  2. Compare at least three evidence-based trauma treatments, including their mechanisms of action and clinical outcomes.
  3. Explore strategies to support trauma-informed care within systems and communities, emphasizing strength-based frameworks that foster recovery, empowerment, and personal growth beyond survival.
  4. Identify at least three common psychological and emotional responses to trauma.
  5. Describe at least two ways trauma can impact relationships, behavior, and daily functioning.
  6. Identify at least three trauma-informed strategies that promote safety, trust, and empowerment in clinical practice.
  7. Apply at least two evidence-based approaches to support healing and resilience in individuals affected by trauma.
  8. Describe at least two mechanisms through which the brain and body can heal and adapt following trauma.
  9. Identify at least two potential benefits and considerations of using TMS in individuals with trauma-related symptoms.
  10. Identify at least two ways the neurobiology of trauma contributes to self-blame and describe strategies to promote self-compassion in trauma survivors.
  11. Identify at least two ways religious trauma can impact an individual's identity, mental health, and relationships and describe strategies to support healing.
  12. Identify at least two ways grief affects the brain and body and describe strategies to support healthy integration of loss.
  13. Identify at least three evidence-based strategies for restoring safety and promoting healing in patients following medical trauma.
  14. Identify at least three trauma-informed strategies for supporting parents and caregivers while addressing their own trauma-related needs.
  15. Describe at least two potential benefits of Yoga Nidra as a trauma-informed approach to promoting relaxation, nervous system regulation, and healing.
  16. Identify at least three occupational therapy approaches that support recovery and functional improvement in individuals with PTSD.
  17. Identify at least three ways cultural wisdom and lived experiences can inform trauma-informed clinical practice.
  18. Describe at least two principles of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and its application in the treatment of trauma-related symptoms.
