2024-2027 EEH Enduring: Iron Deficiency

In 2024, all Endeavor labs will be changing the serum ferritin lower limit reference range to 50ng/mL. This adjustment will result in more patients being diagnosed with iron deficiency. This change reflects a normal physiological ferritin range instead of the historically used Gaussian distribution, which has led to the underdiagnosis and undertreatment of iron deficiency, especially in women. This educational activity is specifically designed for providers to better understand the rationale for this new diagnostic threshold, how to interpret other iron labs appropriately, and to learn optimal ways to treat iron deficiency.

1. Explain the rationale for recent ferritin reference range change at Endeavor that will result in more diagnoses of iron deficiency.
2. Evaluate the available labs to diagnose iron deficiency and their pitfalls.
3. Apply optimal ways to treat iron deficiency.
