Overview
Tongue and lip ties are a common condition that restricts tongue movement in children and newborns. Approximately 5% of babies are born with a tongue or lip tie. This condition may cause difficulty in breastfeeding and speech development issues. Problems caused by tongue and lips ties are often reversed with a frenotomy. This activity has been designed to assist Health Care Providers determine whether a pediatric patient would benefit from treatment and need to be referred. Additionally, the history of tongue tie releases, current trends, anticipated benefits and complications of tongue and lip ties will be reviewed. A discussion on the clinical consensus statements from the American Academy of Otolaryngology (AAO-HNS) and American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology (ASPO) will help guide clinicians in their approach to the management of tongue ties.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. 1. Describe tongue ties as a condition that can potentially cause clinical dysfunction.
  2. 2. Identify when to refer an infant for frenotomy.
  3. 3. Summarize the 2020 American Academy of Otolaryngology's "Clinical Consensus Statement: Ankyloglossia in Children".
