2024-2027 EDW Enduring Program: Stroke Education

Course Instructions

This course is required for certain specialties as part of the Edward-Elmhurst Health Stroke Certification Accreditation Standards. 

It is recommended that any provider with patient contact take this course to familiarize themselves with the stroke guidelines and the most recent changes to acute ischemic stroke protocols. Registration is required so that we can appropriately track participation for certification purposes.

Every 40 seconds someone in the United States experiences a stroke. Stroke is also the leading cause of disability in the US and 5th leading cause of mortality. As a result of the high-quality care delivered to stroke patients in our acute care setting, Edward Hospital is designated as Comprehensive Stroke Center through the certifying body Det Norske Veritas (DNV). DNV requires that hospitalists who deliver care to stroke patients receive 6 hours of stroke -related education over a 2-year cycle. This learning module will allow our organization to meet these requirements while providing our physicians with knowledge pertaining to updated clinical practice guidelines (American Heart Association and DNV), stroke-related target time metrics, differentiation of ischemic stroke syndromes, prescribing dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT), and interpretation of NIH Stroke Scale findings. This program will also provide an overview of our stroke emergency responses: Code Stroke, Code Stroke Dawn, and Code Stroke Yellow and correlate the type of response that is required based on the patients presenting factors and clinical condition.

1. Identify best practices for treatment of acute ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke.
2. Define the diagnosis of stroke and the differentiation between ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke.
3. Examine the latest guidelines and updates for prehospital care, urgent and emergency evaluation and treatment with intravenous (IV) and intra-arterial therapies.
4. Develop care paths, protocols, treatment plans, and standing orders.
