Overview

The Pediatrics in Review Symposium is to allow a forum for pediatricians and pediatric sub-specialists to share knowledge regarding diagnosis, management and treatment of pediatric conditions or diseases.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Cystic Fibrosis in the Era of Genetic Modulators 1. Review newborn screen process for CF and its challenges 2. Introduce genetic modulator therapy including mechanism and treatment 3. Discuss outcomes in CF and future opportunities
  2. New Era Biological Therapies for IBD 1. Review the diagnosis of IBD in Pediatrics 2. Discuss the treatment of IBD in the Era of Biologics 3. Discuss the potential complications of complex IBD
  3. Redefining Pediatric Hearing Loss: Precision, Early Intervention, and Developmental Outcomes 1. Review why early auditory access- not screening alone- determines long-term language outcomes 2. Demonstrate how etiologic diagnosis is shifting management toward precision-based care. 3. Discuss how modern management prioritizes developmental trajectory over audiometric thresholds
  4. Discussion on GLP-1’s 1. Review the latest clinical guidelines and recommendations for pharmacologic management of obesity. 2. Present updates on approved and emerging anti-obesity medications, including mechanisms of action, efficacy, and safety profiles. 3. Discuss strategies for integrating anti-obesity pharmacotherapy into individualized patient care alongside lifestyle interventions.
  5. The Limits of Viability: Life after the NICU 1. Review the limits of periviability and common morbidities associated with extreme prematurity. 2. Identify the unique medical vulnerabilities of extremely preterm infants after NICU discharge. 3. Integrate evidence-based outpatient management plans, developmental care principles, and family support into primary care practice for extremely preterm infants.
  6. Urticaria: It’s Often Not an Allergy — What Every Pediatrician Needs to Know 1. Differentiate acute from chronic urticaria —and recognize when allergic etiology is, and is not, the likely driver of disease. 2. Apply evidence-based guidelines for the appropriate diagnostic workup of chronic urticaria, including when allergy testing is indicated and when it should be avoided. 3. Identify stepwise treatment options for chronic urticaria including treatments beyond second-generation antihistamines, including antihistamine updosing strategies, and biologic therapies.
  7. Beyond the EpiPen: Modern Treatment Strategies for IgE-Mediated Food Allergy in Children 1. Describe the mechanism, efficacy, and patient selection criteria for oral immunotherapy (OIT) in children with IgE-mediated food allergy. 2. Explain the role of omalizumab (Xolair®) as a standalone and adjunct therapy in pediatric food allergy management. 3. Counsel families on the evolving landscape of epinephrine delivery, including the FDA-approved intranasal epinephrine (Neffy®) as an alternative to auto-injectors, and review emerging data on sublingual epinephrine (not yet FDA-approved).
  8. New and Emerging Therapies in Pediatric Dermatology 1. Become familiar with newer treatment options used for inflammatory disorders of the skin 2. Understand mechanisms of action 3. Review their indications for use and learn about potential side effects and implications of long term use
