Overview
This Neuroscience Grand Rounds presentation addresses two prevalent and often challenging conditions seen in Primary Care settings. Join Dr. Cathy Stachnik and Dr. Elizabeth Callahan for a dynamic two-segment presentation on Neuropathic Disorders & Hip–Spine Syndrome. In the first segment, we will explore the pathophysiology of neuropathic pain, with a focus on painful neuropathies (particularly in diabetes and metabolic syndrome). We will then review how to distinguish upper extremity mononeuropathies from cervical radiculopathy, followed by a pragmatic overview of treatment strategies. In the second segment, we turn our attention to Hip-Spine Syndrome — the complex interplay between hip and lumbar spine pathology — examining its relevance to primary care, clinical assessment, and management strategies to optimize outcomes. This activity is designed for physicians and providers who seek to enhance their diagnostic acumen, refine their therapeutic approach, and improve patient care for two common and complex conditions.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify key features of painful neuropathies, especially in those patients with diabetes or metabolic syndrome.
  2. Differentiate upper-extremity mononeuropathy (focal entrapment) from cervical radiculopathy.
  3. Recognize hip-spine syndrome and understand the biomechanical interplay of hip and lumbar spine pathology and the combined impact on function.
  4. Discuss diagnostic approaches and management strategies of hip-spine syndrome.
  5. Identify current treatment strategies for neuropathic pain.
