Overview
This educational activity is specifically designed to discuss common health issues in the U.S., including back pain, breast cancer, type 2 diabetes, and prostate cancer. Back pain affects a significant portion of adults, often stemming from years of poor posture and strain on the back. In 2019, 39% of adults in the U.S. had back pain and, in 2020, low back pain affected 619 million people globally. It's a leading reason for primary care visits. Breast cancer affects thousands annually, with advancements in screening and treatment improving outcomes. Each year in the United States, about 240,000 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in women and about 2,100 in men – about 42,000 women and 500 men in the U.S. die each year from breast cancer. Type 2 diabetes is increasingly prevalent due to obesity, impacting millions of Americans who are often responsible for managing their treatment. About 38 million Americans have diabetes, and approximately 95% of them have type 2. Prostate cancer is common in men, though not always fatal, highlighting the importance of proper screening and treatment awareness among healthcare professionals. Out of every 100 American men, about 13 will get prostate cancer during their lifetime. Healthcare providers need to be aware of the appropriate screening and treatments for these prevalent health concerns.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. 1. Describe the symptoms that occur from musculoskeletal pain.
  2. 2. Identify the appropriate testing and evaluation of back pain.
  3. 3. Integrate treatment to improve patient pain and function.
  4. 4. Define the risk factors and symptoms for breast cancer.
  5. 5. Identify the appropriate testing and imaging to identify breast cancer.
  6. 6. Implement treatments to improve patient survival from breast cancer.
  7. 7. Explain the risk factors that predispose to type 2 diabetes
  8. 8. Define the appropriate screening and testing for type 2 diabetes.
  9. 9. Develop ways to decrease the health risks and deaths related to type 2 diabetes.
  10. 10. Discuss the recommended screening for prostate cancer.
  11. 11.Outline the appropriate testing and evaluation of prostate cancer.
  12. 12. Formulate approaches to decrease the health complications and fatalities caused by prostate cancer.
