Overview
The tragedies of the COVID-19 pandemic have devastated the lives of millions around the world. Although social distancing is necessary to stop the spread of COVID-19, on-going social distancing and extended isolation have increased people's feelings of loneliness and alienation. These public health measures have resulted in an increased number of patients experiencing mental health issues. In an annual study by Mental Health America, the number of people looking for help with anxiety and depression skyrocketed during the pandemic. Health screenings increased more than 60% in 2020 compared to 2019, and 8 out of the 10 people taking a depression screen revealed symptoms of moderate to severe depression. This live activity is designed to assist providers in identifying and treating patients of various ages who are suffering with mental health illnesses. This activity is also devised to assist providers in determining when it may be necessary to refer patients with mental health illness to an inpatient or outpatient program.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this live activity, participants will be able to:

  1. 1. Discuss innovations in the management of major depression.
  2. 2. Outline recent advances in treating bipolar depressive spectrum disorders.
  3. 3. Evaluate and treat depression and anxiety in geriatric patients.
  4. 4. Analyze when it is appropriate to refer a patient to an inpatient mental health program.
