Overview
Obesity, having a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above, increases risk of severe illness from COVID-19. Patients of any age at high risk if they have underlying medical conditions, such as obesity. Recent findings show obesity among COVID-19 patients has particularly high risk of death more so than related risk factors such as diabetes or hypertension. It is especially important for people at increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19, and those who live with them, to protect themselves from getting COVID-19. By reviewing the most current research on high risk factors, providers can understand the mortality and co-morbidities of the novel coronavirus. This journal activity is designed to review studies on obesity as an increased risk for severe illness and death from COVID-19.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. 1. Discuss research on BMI and risk for death among patients with a diagnosis of COVID-19.
  2. 2. Identify comorbid conditions in obese patients diagnosed with COVID-19.
  3. 3. Outline preventative measures for high risk patients against COVID-19.
