Overview
Interpreting monoclonal protein studies involves understanding various laboratory tests and their implications in diagnosing cancer. These results can detect cancers such as multiple myeloma, leukemia, and lymphomas. Accurate interpretation of these studies requires a thorough understanding of the various tests and their clinical implications. Primary care providers need to be proficient in interpreting these results to ensure accurate diagnosis and optimal patient management. This educational activity is specifically designed to give providers the confidence to gain in-depth knowledge of serum protein electrophoresis (SPEP), immunofixation electrophoresis (IFE), serum free light chain assays (SFLC), and other relevant laboratory tests. Additionally, providers will learn to correlate pathology results with clinical symptoms, physical examination findings, and patient history.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Analyze lab results to detect indications of cancer.
  2. Evaluate how monoclonal protein studies relate to clinical observations and patient history for accurate diagnosis.
  3. Utilize monoclonal protein studies to develop evidence-based patient management plans.
