Overview
Migraines are among the most common disorders globally, affecting up to 148 million people, with over 37 million in the U.S. alone. Primary care providers frequently see patients with migraines and must be able to recognize their distinct phases and symptoms for accurate diagnosis. This activity aims to update providers on the latest advancements in migraine management, including newly approved medications, to help deliver more effective, up-to-date treatment options. In contrast, cranial neuralgia is a painful neurological disorder that is notoriously difficult to diagnose and treat. Despite advances in medical imaging, nearly half of cranial neuralgia patients wait more than two years for a diagnosis due to the complexity of their symptoms, leading to prolonged suffering and a diminished quality of life. Early recognition and timely intervention in cranial neuralgia are essential to improving patient outcomes and quality of life.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the clinical presentation of migraine, including common symptoms and phases (prodrome, aura, headache).
  2. Explain the role of CGRP (Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide) in the pathophysiology of migraine.
  3. Identify current treatment options and recent advances in migraine management.
  4. Identify conditions that can mimic cranial neuralgias and learn how to diagnose and treat them correctly.
  5. Evaluate different surgical options for patients experiencing neurological symptoms, considering both their advantages and possible risks.
