Overview
In the US, trauma is the leading cause of death in young adults and accounts for 10% of all deaths among men and women1. The modern approach to trauma management consists of a complex tree of decisions. From on-scene resuscitation, through emergency department triage and diagnostics, to operating room procedures and strategy, clinicians make a rapid sequence of crucial choices to secure the best chance of survival for their patients. As a Level II Trauma Center, Edward-Elmhurst Hospitals must perform focused outcome analyses of its trauma services on a quarterly basis reviewing patient deaths, morbidity, audit filters to assign status and increase awareness of outcomes as required by Joint Commission and Illinois Department of Public Health regulations. This case review conference is used to identify correctible deficiencies in provider practices, system failures, and patient behaviors to improve future patient outcomes.
