Overview
Pediatric hand injuries are a common reason for physician consultation. The most common and potentially problematic pediatric hand injuries include fingertip injuries, phalangeal fractures, tendon injuries, and hand burns. Management is limited by difficulties in proper assessment of the hand and the paucity of evidence to guide treatment. Assessment of hand injuries can be challenging in the pediatric population. Injury patterns and management might be different than for adult trauma due to differences in mechanism of injury, the presence of open physes, and patient compliance. The window for intervention might be shorter in children compared with adults because of faster rates of healing. Because of these factors, this activity was design to assist providers in identifying how common pediatric hand injuries may present and how they can be treated and/or managed by the provider.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this live activity, participants should be able to:

  1. 1. Summarize the presentation of and physical exam for common pediatric hand injuries
  2. 2. Discuss surgical indications and technical considerations for common pediatric hand injuries
  3. 3. Assess which common pediatric hand injuries may benefit from early motion
  4. 4. Discuss initial management strategies and possible nonsurgical treatment options for common pediatric hand injuries.
