Overview
During 2015–2016, according to the CDC, the prevalence of hypertension was 29.0% and increased with age: age group 18–39, 7.5%; 40–59, 33.2%; and 60 and over, 63.1%. High blood pressure, is a common medical problem that can increase the risk for heart disease and stroke. Hypertension is also a culturally based issue. Hypertension prevalence was higher among non-Hispanic black (40.3%) than non-Hispanic white (27.8%), non-Hispanic Asian (25.0%), or Hispanic (27.8%) adults. Controlling high blood pressure is still an issue for many adults. Hypertension control was higher among non-Hispanic white (50.8%) than non-Hispanic black (44.6%) or non-Hispanic Asian (37.4%) adults. It remains a serious public health issue in the US. Until recently, the main emphasis in hypertension treatment had been lowering diastolic blood pressure; however, in the past decade, the important contributions of systolic hypertension, increased pulse pressure, and a blunted reduction in nocturnal blood pressure have been described. This activity is designed to discuss the complex nature of hypertension so physicians are aware of how to assist patients in avoiding increased risk, screening and diagnosis, and the latest available treatment options.

At the conclusion of this enduring online activity, participants should be able to:
