Overview
The relationship between a physician and a patient is a very personal one.  To ensure successful care, there must be a high level of comfort that allows for open, honest communication and the development of trust.  And for many patients, that comfort can derive from working with a doctor who understand their heritage.  According to a study released by the CDC National Center for Health Statistics, a significant percentage of racial and ethnic minorities feel that it is essential to have health care providers who share their culture. One of the largest minority groups to want that kind of connection is Hispanics with nearly 33% of Hispanic adults stating that is very important to have a physician who shares or understands their culture. Yet, according to the CDC, less than 6% of U.S. doctors identify as Hispanic or Latino.  LatinX doctors across the country are making strides not only in terms of patient care but also in the areas of medical research and development. This article showcases six LatinX physicians who are leading by example and changing the face of healthcare.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this enduring activity, participants should be able to:

  1. 1. Reflect on the importance of connection between patient's heritage/culture and their healthcare.
  2. 2. Discuss the value of diversity within the healthcare profession and the role it plays within research and patient care.
