Overview
Patient blood management is a patient-centered, evidence-based approach to eliminating unnecessary blood transfusions. For many patients, blood transfusion is not an option, whether for religious reasons, safety concerns or a shortage of blood donations. Bloodless medicine and surgery are blood transfusion alternatives that have been shown to reduce infections and help patients recover faster. Surgeons may use methods such as using smaller tubes, limiting blood sampling, conducting multiple tests per blood draw or using medications or devices that control blood loss or enhance clotting. Blood supplies may be running low because of the pandemic. The rate of blood donations may be diminishing as people are infected with COVID-19. This activity is designed to study the essential role of patient blood management (PMB) no matter the cause.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this live activity participants should be able to:

  1. 1. Review Patient Blood Management (PBM) guidelines and recommendations by specialty and clinical settings.
  2. 2. Explain treatments to conserve patient blood without transfusion.
  3. 3. Recall strategies to minimize blood loss during surgery.
