Overview

Neurosurgical care in the neonatal patient presents unique challenges due to the physiological immaturity of newborns and the complexity of congenital and acquired conditions affecting the central nervous system. Conditions such as hydrocephalus, neural tube defects, congenital brain malformations, and perinatal intracranial hemorrhages require timely diagnosis, careful assessment of severity, and a nuanced understanding of both non-surgical and surgical interventions. Advances in diagnostic imaging, minimally invasive techniques, and evidence-based protocols have substantially improved outcomes, yet pediatric neurosurgeons must remain vigilant in evaluating intervention criteria, the timing of procedures, and potential complication. This CME activity is designed to provide clinicians with up-to-date knowledge on identification and management strategies of common neonatal neurosurgical disorders with special attention to the importance of multidisciplinary care in optimizing early management and long-term outcomes.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the clinical presentation of common neurologic conditions that require neurosurgical consultation and diagnostic evaluation.
  2. Explain the indications and timing for neurosurgical intervention in neonates and the importance of coordination of the multidisciplinary care to ensure the best patient outcomes.
  3. Identify short- and long-term complications of neurosurgical procedures in newborns to optimize early management and plan the follow-up care.
