Overview
Data related to the care of critically ill and injured patients is rapidly evolving with advances in science and technology. If implementation at the bedside fails to keep pace, optimal patient care can be compromised. The 19th Annual Trauma Symposium, hosted by 11 Trauma Centers in Illinois' EMS Region VIII, is designed to improve healthcare providers' knowledge, competence, and performance in the daily care of critically ill and traumatized patients to prevent additional information and technology knowledge gaps. The symposium features didactic lectures and inspiring keynote addresses, balancing evidence-based principles and innovative, thought-provoking elements of trauma, critical care, and emergency medicine. It also incorporates prehospital trauma care systems and the newest techniques for evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment; it provides valuable updates on managing injured and critically ill patients.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify critical priorities in the initial assessment and resuscitation of burn patients within the first 24 hours. Focus: Airway management, fluid resuscitation, burn size/depth estimation, and early transfer decisions.
  2. Recognize common pitfalls that can delay or compromise optimal burn care during the acute phase. Focus: Under-resuscitation, missed inhalation injury, inappropriate wound care, and delays in pain control or antibiotic use.
  3. Apply evidence-based strategies to improve early burn care and patient outcomes. Focus: Protocol-driven management, multidisciplinary coordination, and early involvement of burn centers.
  4. Identify unique differences in the pediatric trauma.
  5. Recognize the differences in injury patterns of children.
  6. Discuss the management and treatment of commonly seen traumatic pediatric injuries.
  7. Identify brain injury guidelines in traumatic injuries.
  8. Evaluate the use neuromonitoring-Pbt-02 in trauma.
  9. Understand the use of craniotomy/craniectomy in traumatic injuries.
  10. Discuss the use of Tranexamic acid in traumatic head injuries.
  11. Discuss Gun Violence Epidemiology.
  12. What is secure firearm storage and why is it important?
  13. Discuss physician firearm counseling (barriers to counseling, who should we counsel and it's effect).
  14. Local firearm legislation as it pertains to safe storage, how to get more involved.
  15. Apply principles of kinematics to develop an index of suspicion for both blunt and penetrating trauma.
  16. Integrate kinematic principles into your overall assessment to identify the patient’s need for timely medical intervention.
  17. Evaluate how age and health status interact with kinematic forces to adjust your index of suspicion for potential injuries.
  18. Discuss common post resuscitation issues and their causes.
  19. Understand the Trimodal distribution of death after trauma and their causes.
  20. Identify compartment syndrome, how to diagnose, and how to treat effectively.
