Overview
Leukemia is a cancer of the early blood-forming cells. Most often, leukemia is a cancer of the white blood cells, but some forms of leukemia start in other blood cell types. There are several types of leukemia, which are divided based mainly on whether the leukemia is acute (fast growing) or chronic (slower growing), and whether it starts in myeloid cells or lymphoid cells. Different types of leukemia have different treatment options and outlooks. Leukemia was a deadly condition for many years. However, medical breakthroughs and improved treatments have allowed many patients to be cured of certain types of leukemia. After diagnosis and treatment, many people with leukemia live many good, quality years. It is critical for healthcare providers to understand the different diagnoses of leukemia types, the varying treatments, and the process for referral to an appropriate specialist.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this enduring online activity, participants should be able to:

  1. 1. Recall the symptoms and diagnosis of leukemia.
  2. 2. Describe the appropriate testing to make the diagnosis of leukemia.
  3. 3. Employ the appropriate referral process for patients diagnosed with leukemia.
