Overview
On January 31, 2020, Health and Human Services Secretary, Alex M. Azar II, declared a public health emergency (PHE) for the United States to aid the nation’s healthcare community in responding to COVID-19. The outbreak of respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus, COVID19, from Wuhan City, Hubei Province in China has caused high morbidity and mortality rates. The beginning of the outbreak was linked to a large seafood and live animal market, suggesting animal-to-person spread. Later, a growing number of patients reportedly did not have exposure to animal markets, indicating person-to-person spread. International impact of the disease has affected travel by causing extensive illness screenings and quarantine procedures in attempt to contain the virus. The potential public health threat posed by COVID-19 is high, both globally and to the United States. On February 3, CDC posted “Guidance for assessing the potential risk for various exposures to COVID-19 and managing those people appropriately”. Frequently reported signs and symptoms include fever, cough, myalgia or fatigue and shortness of breath. Healthcare workers are at increased risk due to the care of the patients and potential exposure to patients that traveled overseas. This activity is designed to provide physicians and other providers with the latest information and resources on the COVID19 virus in order to properly identify and follow CDC protocol for the reporting and management of identified patients.

  1. 1. Identify the specifics of the novel coronavirus infection symptoms.
